CALVARY HOSPITAL DEDICATES ROSEMARIE O'KEEFE MEMORIAL GARDEN & PATIO AT BROOKLYN SATELLITE
Campus will mark 10th Anniversary Later This Year
BRONX, NEW YORK, June 23, 2011 – On June 14, Calvary Hospital officially dedicated the Rosemarie O’Keefe Memorial Garden & Patio at its Brooklyn Campus, located within Lutheran Medical Center. Calvary provided end-of-life care to Rosemarie and her husband, William, at their Brooklyn Satellite. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz was on hand to present a proclamation, making June 14, 2011 “Rosemarie O’Keefe Memorial Garden and Patio Dedication Day.”
“As we get ready to celebrate 10 years of Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn in October, we are proud of the 4,000 patients and families that we have been privileged to care for to date,” said Frank A. Calamari, President & CEO, Calvary. “We are very grateful to all the people who helped raise money for the renovation of the garden and patio. This will allow Calvary to continue bringing peace and comfort to many more families.”
“Rosemarie was a dedicated and tireless public servant who served the citizens of New York for many years,” said Florence Diaz, a long-time friend of hers and a member of the committee that raised the funds to renovate the garden and patio. “Gardening was among Rosemarie’s many passions. Dedicating this garden and patio in her memory, is a wonderful way to pay tribute to Rosemarie’s many contributions to the people of New York.”
In recognition of Rosemarie’s fierce dedication to public service, then Mayor Giuliani appointed her the first Commissioner of the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit. Among her many career accomplishments, Rosemarie coordinated massive efforts after 9/11 to provide sorely needed medical, psychiatric and other services to thousands of first responders and average citizens.
A long-time resident of Bay Ridge and a respected community organizer, Rosemarie was a devoted wife, sister, aunt and friend. She was a well-known and beloved figure known to many throughout the city. A true patriot, Rosemarie would have appreciated the date of the dedication i.e. Flag Day.
The Hospital’s satellite is located on the 3rd floor of Lutheran Medical Center. When Calvary opened the facility in 2001, it was the first “hospital within a hospital” in New York State. It will celebrate its 10 year anniversary in October 2011. To date, the Brooklyn campus has provided care for more than 4,000 patients and their families. Currently, adults who reside in the borough also have access to Calvary’s Home Hospice care in the privacy of their home and in three select nursing homes, and weekly bereavement support groups. In September 2011, Calvary will begin offering bereavement groups for children ages 6-17.
Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients. A 225-bed facility with locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Calvary is the model for the relief of cancer pain and symptoms for more than a century. More than 5,700 patients are cared for annually by Calvary’s inpatient, outpatient, homecare, hospice, nursing home hospice, and wound care services.
