Calvary Hospital Unveils Renovated Beauty Salon

CALVARY HOSPITAL UNVEILS RENOVATED BEAUTY SALON
Hospital to expand salon services in Bronx and Brooklyn

BRONX, NEW YORK, November 18, 2011 – Calvary recently hosted a ribbon cutting for its renovated Beauty Salon located on the 4th Floor at its 200-bed flagship hospital in the Bronx. A bequest from the estate of former long-time hospital volunteer, Nicholas (Nick) Giannone was instrumental in making the renovation possible. Calvary also made two related announcements, both to begin the week of November 21: 1) it will start offering bedside beauty salon services on Thursdays for the first time for patients at the Brooklyn Satellite at Lutheran Medical Center and 2) the Bronx campus will now offer a 2nd day each week for patients to obtain services i.e. Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

“Offering salon services is one of the many unique things we do at Calvary as part of our signature care to patients,” said Sally Umbro, RN, Vice President for Patient Care Services. “We are fortunate that we have dedicated staff willing to take on additional responsibilities so that patients can be assisted with activities they may no longer be able to do for themselves. In addition, services like the Beauty Parlor help put our Core Values of Caring, Commitment, Compassion, Dignity, and Non-Abandonment into meaningful practice.”

From 1987-1999, Mr. Giannone volunteered at Calvary every Tuesday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. He was very dedicated, arranging his schedule around his important service here. Mr. Giannone contributed 3,023 hours of service at Calvary. Using a 40-hour week, that amounts to more than 75 weeks of volunteering here!

Although he spent nearly 50 years as a butcher, when Mr. Giannone heard that the Hospital needed someone to go from room to room, giving haircuts to patients, he immediately took that on. He faithfully carried out this task, along with assisting with nutrition carts and with our weekday Therapeutic Recreation events for patients and visitors. Mr. Giannone passed away in March 2009.

The Hospital Salon services currently include: hair wash, cut, styling and manicures. Patients can choose to receive services in their rooms or in the salon. Additionally, manicures are also available for family members at the Bronx campus -- upon request. All of Calvary’s salon services are offered at no charge.

The Calvary Beauty Salon is staffed by five Cancer Care Technicians with beautician licenses and a professional manicurist. The existence of these CCTs with their licenses is an excellent example of how Calvary encourages staff to work on their professional development continuously.
