BRONX, NEW YORK, March 2013 -- Calvary Hospital is happy to announce the appointment of Stephanie Mastropaolo as the Coordinator of the Family Care Center (FCC). She is a licensed master of social work and has worked at Calvary as a social worker since 2005. As the Coordinator of the Family Care Center, Ms. Mastropaolo is responsible for organizing and implementing all services and programs housed in the FCC. She is available to provide one-on-one counseling to family members of Calvary inpatients. Additionally, she facilitates various support groups for family members. Ms. Mastropaolo collaborates with community resources, bringing them in to Calvary Hospital to educate family members to their services. Not only do we treat our patients with the utmost care but at Calvary Hospital we treat our families with the same regard.
Ms. Mastropaolo spent more than seven years working directly with patients at the 200-bed Bronx campus. Her duties included but were not limited to: performing initial psychosocial assessments of patients; providing ongoing psychosocial support, advocacy, education, crisis intervention and referral services to patients and families; and assessing family members for risk of prolonged grief and bereavement services needs. She also facilitated family support groups for adults, played a key role in Family Intervention Team meetings, and helped educate some of the more than 800 medical students and EMS workers who come to Calvary each year to learn about end of life care.
Prior to joining Calvary as a full-time member of the Social Work/Family Care Department, Ms. Mastropaolo completed her field placement internship in Calvary Hospital’s Family Care department and at the Children’s Aid Society. She worked for the New York City Department of Education, providing substance abuse prevention education to all students and individual and group counseling for at-risk students in elementary and middle schools.
Ms. Mastropaolo was graduated from The George Washington University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and from Hunter College where she received her Master of Social Work degree, majoring in Group Work. She and her family reside in Brookfield, CT.
Calvary established the Family Care Center (FCC) at its Bronx facility in 2004 to support families. In addition to giving family members an opportunity to meet one another and to provide a respite from the stress and emotional turmoil that can exist on the patient floors, the FCC also hosts informational lectures on many topics. These include cancer prevention and screening, long-term planning and other topics useful to family members. The center is available for people to check their email, read the daily newspapers, get a manicure, massage, a cup of coffee, or simply to gather their thoughts.
Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients.
