|Calvary Care for Jewish Patients and Families|
BRONX, NY, May 2013 – Calvary Hospital has just published a comprehensive brochure entitled “Meeting the Needs of Our Jewish Patients and Families.” From kosher meals, medical care in accordance with Halakha (Jewish Law), and Shabbos housing, to nearby prayer services, Pelham Parkway eruv, and sensitive end-of-life counseling, the Calvary brochure covers a wide range of topics important to the Jewish community. Ever since the Hospital was founded in 1899, Calvary has welcomed the opportunity to care for patients of all faith backgrounds. There are 30 members of the Pastoral Care Department who care for the spiritual needs of inpatients at the 200-bed Bronx campus, 25-bed Brooklyn Satellite, and hundreds of patients in its renowned Home Hospice program.
In November 2012, Calvary and Yeshiva University’s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) announced an innovative collaboration to provide observant Jewish families with information regarding the best end-of-life medical care available today. The YU/RIETS End-of-Life Halachic Advisory Program offers rabbinic consultation for families and community rabbis who seek halachically appropriate, high quality end-of-life medical care.
