Calvary Hospital Awards 2010 Eddie Higgins

Scholarship to Bronx Resident Amy Diaz

BRONX, NY, August 2010 -- Calvary Hospital has awarded the 2010 Eddie Higgins Scholarship to an outstanding student, Amy Diaz.  Her mother Melissa Ortiz, a 7-year veteran of Calvary Hospital, currently works in the Finance Department. To win the scholarship, Amy had to both demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and the determination and spirit of Eddie Higgins

Amy, 17, recently graduated from Evander Childs High School of Computers and Technology in the Bronx. During her time at Evander, she was part of an innovative youth development program, the M.O.U.S.E Squad, which prepares and supports students in establishing and managing leading edge technical support help desks in their schools. Amy was also active in her high school’s Student Council, Journalism Club, and assisted the Football Manager with numerous bookkeeping responsibilities. Amy has volunteered with Calvary@Home since 2008; she will continue volunteering in the fall. Amy will soon matriculate at Iona College (New Rochelle, NY) for an undergraduate degree in English and Special Education. Ultimately, she plans to obtain a Master’s Degree and become an elementary school teacher. Amy and her family reside in the Burke Avenue section of the Bronx.

The Eddie Higgins Scholarship is named after a cherished member of the Calvary family who came to the hospital as a young boy. Eddie was hospitalized intermittently for 15 years at Calvary until his death in 1982 at the age of 29. Eddie is remembered for his love of God and his remarkable courage despite his illness. Calvary has given the annual scholarship since 1985.
