CALVARY RE-ESTABLISHES CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (CPE) PROGRAM
First Group Graduates Next Month
BRONX, NY, October 2010 – Calvary (www.calvaryhospital.org), the country’s only fully accredited acute care hospital dedicated to providing palliative care for adult advanced cancer patients, has re-established their Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program. The 20-week,
400-hour program is the country’s only CPE program focused on giving students hands-on experience with terminally ill patients.
“Since our beginnings in 1899, Calvary has always focused on caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our patients and their families. Our decision to re-establish the CPE program is a testament to the need for ongoing education in this very important service,” said Father Chux Okochi, MA, PhD, Director of Pastoral Care for the Hospital.
The inaugural class of Calvary’s CPE program is comprised of seven men and women, ranging in age from 20s to 70. Professionally, they include a physician, college professor, and former advertising/marketing executive, and represent a range of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Each week, they attend a 5-hour group class and do 15 hours of clinical work -- under supervision -- with current Calvary inpatients and @Home patients. They graduate in November.
For 2011, Calvary plans on graduating at least two groups of students. Given the strong demand for health care services in New York City to the Latino community, Calvary will be able to offer curricula next year to students who prefer to communicate in Spanish.
Pastoral Care is provided at every hospital in this country. At Calvary, where the need for pastoral care is stronger than at many other places, a staff of more than two dozen Pastoral Care Providers – representing a range of faith traditions -- care for 225 inpatients and their families at the Hospital’s Bronx and Brooklyn campuses. In addition, Calvary also provides Pastoral Care for more than 250 Calvary@Home patients who reside throughout the greater New York City area.
Calvary Pastoral Care Providers perform important services such as regular worship services at both campuses, individual counseling, and delivering the sacraments. A Spanish-speaking ministry is also available. Calvary serves a religiously and ethnically diverse population of patients and families. Whether they are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Mormon, etc. the Hospital is able and willing to help any patients with their pastoral care needs.
Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients. A 225-bed facility with locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Calvary is the model for the relief of cancer pain and symptoms for more than a century. More than 5,500 patients are cared for annually by Calvary’s inpatient, outpatient, home, hospice, nursing home hospice, and wound care services.
