Press Ganey honors Calvary with 5th Summit Award Nov 2010

Only Hospital from New York to Make this Elite Group

BRONX, NEW YORK, November 2010 – For the 5th straight year, Press Ganey Associates, Inc. has bestowed Calvary with a Summit Award, in recognition of the Hospital’s consistent ranking in the 95th percentile for overall patient satisfaction.  Press Ganey awards this annual honor to the country’s top performing health care facilities that sustain the highest level of customer satisfaction for three or more consecutive years.  Since 2006, the first year that the Summit Award has been awarded, Calvary has been the only hospital from New York State to: 1) receive this prestigious award for five consecutive years and 2) to be recognized for excellence in the “Inpatient Care” category.

“Since we were founded more than a century ago, Calvary’s mission has remained the same – to provide the best possible care to every single patient and their family.  This mission is as relevant today as it was in 1899,” said Frank A. Calamari, President and Chief Executive Officer.  “It is very gratifying to see that our efforts have resulted in Calvary being recognized among the country’s best hospitals today.”

Press Ganey currently partners with more than 7,000 health care facilities -- including nearly 40% of U.S. hospitals -- to measure and improve the quality of their care. The company’s databases are the largest in the industry, and allow facilities nationwide to benchmark their results against peer organizations.

          To date, Calvary’s many accolades include the following:

  • An unbroken track record of accreditation from The Joint Commission for Calvary Hospital and Calvary@Home (Home Care and Hospice).
  • Being designated by the National Cancer Institute in 2005 as an “international center for training in palliative care”;
  • Being spotlighted in the Altman Foundation’s annual report, which praised “Calvary Hospital’s groundbreaking work in nursing homes”; and
  • The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization places Calvary@Home above state and national averages in important patient issues such as relief of pain and patient education.

Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients.  A 225-bed facility with locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Calvary is the model for the relief of cancer pain and symptoms for more than a century.  More than 5,500 patients are cared for annually by Calvary’s inpatient, outpatient, home, hospice, nursing home hospice, and wound care services.  To learn more or sign up for the e-newsletter, Calvary Life, please go to
