Hospital Recognizes Long-Term Support from Catholic Institute of the Food Industry
NEW YORK, NY, August 6, 2014 – Calvary recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its pioneering Family Care Center (FCC) and recognized the support of The Catholic Institute of the Food Industry (CIFI) over the past 20 years. CIFI presented Calvary with a check for $35,000, to be used by the Family Care/Social Work Department. With this latest gift, CIFI has contributed more than $1.2 million to date, to sustain the Hospital’s mission of compassionate, comprehensive care for patients and their families.
Calvary presented two citations: 1) to CIFI leaders for their long-term and generous support of the Hospital’s family-centric approach to patient care and 2) to Executive Medical Director, Michael J. Brescia, MD, for spearheading the establishment of the FCC.
Since it opened in 2004, the FCC has served thousands of adults and children. It is located on the main floor of our Bronx campus and serves as an oasis for family members of all ages. It offers family members a respite from the emotional turmoil that can exist on the patient floors, the opportunity to check email, read newspapers, get a manicure or a cup of coffee, or simply to gather their thoughts.
The Catholic Institute of the Food Industry (CIFI) was formed in 1946 to unite in fellowship all Catholics, at all levels, who are employed in the food industry. It has been a steadfast and generous supporter of Calvary Hospital’s programs of care. CIFI has also facilitated countless referrals for members of the community, thus increasing access to Calvary care for those most in need. The organization’s beneficence was instrumental in the establishment of Calvary’s unique Family Care Center, and its ongoing support has helped thousands of family members find comfort and respite there.
For 115 years, Calvary Hospital has provided compassionate top-quality care for tens of thousands of patients. Families are so important that there is an entire department – “Family Care” – dedicated to them. Calvary social workers are known as “Family Care Practitioners.” Each has a Master’s degree in Social Work and advanced end-of-life training. They choose to be here, working with people in one of the most intimate and difficult times in the life of any family. No other hospital puts the time and effort into caring for the family as Calvary does.
Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients. A 225-bed facility with locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Calvary is the model for the relief of cancer pain and symptoms for more than a century. More than 6,000 patients are cared for annually by Calvary’s inpatient, outpatient, homecare, hospice, nursing home hospice, and wound care services.
