Calvary announces new board members

BRONX, NEW YORK, June 28, 2017 – Calvary Hospital today announced the addition of four new members this year to the Calvary Hospital and Calvary Fund Board of Directors: Maryann Popiel, MD, Diahn W. McGrath, Jamie B. Stewart and Robert Spatt.

“Since the Hospital’s started nearly 120 years ago, Calvary’s mission has been to provide palliative care to adult patients with advanced cancer and other life limiting illnesses,” said Carlos M. Hernandez, Chairman of the Board, Calvary Fund. “As the Hospital continues to expand, we are confident that these four new board members will help us successfully reach and serve the diverse communities who reside throughout the metro-New York area.”

Diahn W. McGrath (Calvary Fund Board)

Diahn W. McGrath is the managing partner of her small boutique firm, McGrath Law Offices. She focuses on all forms of family and estate law, including matrimonial proceedings, probate and administration, trust and estate accountings, child custody matters, guardianships, probate and trust law, estate and trust administration, and related tax matters. She has received numerous appointments as guardian-ad-litem in the Surrogate’s Court and Supreme Court.

Ms. McGrath is active on Calvary Hospital’s Professional Advisors Council, volunteers for wildlife and is on the board of the Society for the preservation of Long Island Antiquities. She is a member of the Century Club of New York. Ms. McGrath and her husband, Tom, support many philanthropic causes, including the Tanzania Wildlife Fund, the African Rainforest, the Pearlman School of Music, Caumsett Foundation, The Heckscher Museum, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Museum.

Ms. McGrath was graduated from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law with a Juris Doctorate, and from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She and her husband reside in New York City and Lloyd Neck, Long Island.


Maryann Popiel, MD (Calvary Hospital Board)

Dr. Maryann Popiel is the Chairperson, Behavioral Healthcare Services, North Bronx Healthcare Network (Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital). Since joining Jacobi in 1990, Dr. Popiel has served in roles of increasing responsibility including Attending Psychiatrist, Unit Chief, Director of the Inpatient Psychiatry Department and Vice Chairperson, Behavioral Healthcare Services.

Dr. Popiel is very involved in professional groups such as Mental Health Care Association of New York City, as well as various committees related to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Jacobi Medical Center. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and American Association of Emergency Psychiatry, among others. Her academic appointments include: Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Touro College Physician Assistant Program and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry.

Dr. Popiel has been a principal investigator in several research studies with Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She was graduated from Union College with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Psychology and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry with a medical degree. She resides in New York City.

Robert E. Spatt (Calvary Fund Board)

Robert E. Spatt has been a corporate Partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in New York since 1987, where he focuses on corporate and corporate governance advice to public and private company boards of directors, and mergers, acquisitions and restructurings for buying and selling companies, their financial advisors, control stockholders, leveraged buyout firms and special committees of boards of directors.

Mr. Spatt is the Co-Chairman Emeritus of the Tulane Corporate Law Institute, one of the country’s leading M&A institutes. He has been repeatedly named one of the leading M&A lawyers in numerous legal publications, including Chambers Global World’s Leading Lawyers for Business and Chambers USA America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He was named “Dealmaker of the Week” by The American Lawyer in mid-2013 and recognized by Law360 as an “MVP” in M&A for 2014.


Mr. Spatt has for many years been a member of the Executive Committee of the Lawyers Division of UJA Federation of New York and co-led the UJA campaign at Simpson Thacher.

Mr. Spatt was graduated from Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School (J.D., 1980 magna cum laude; Order of the Coif). He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1980. He has published various articles on M&A subjects and regularly serves as a faculty member for leading M&A seminars and institutes.

Jamie B. Stewart, Jr. (Calvary Fund Board)

Jamie B. Stewart, Jr. is the former President and CEO of the Federal Farm Credit Banks Funding Corporation. Prior to joining FFCBFC, Mr. Stewart was First Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from January 1999 to January 2004. He served as acting governor from June through December 2003 and had voting rights on the Federal Open Market committee. Mr. Stewart was instrumental in guiding the Federal Reserve Bank of New York through the banking crisis surrounding the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which caused a temporary liquidity crisis in the U.S. banking system.

After serving in the United States Navy as a surface line officer from 1966-1970, Mr. Stewart’s career path took him from the Bank of Boston to Bank of America to Crocker National Bank (San Francisco) to Mellon Bank, where he served as vice chairman, with responsibility for overall wholesale banking, International operations and cash management activities.

Mr. Stewart was graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French, Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration degree, and from Suffolk Law School (Boston, MA). He and his wife reside in Brooklyn, New York.
