Bereavement Support

Bereavement Services

Calvary Hospital provides bereavement support for adults who have lost loved ones at Calvary Hospital or Calvary@Home, and those from the community at large who have lost someone because of illness, accidents, violence, or any other cause. Groups are offered in the Bronx and Brooklyn.

The Hospital offers age-appropriate support groups for children, ages 6 through 11, and for adolescents, ages 12 to 18. Groups for children and teens take place in the Bronx.  In late 2010, groups for children will begin in downtown Brooklyn.

For complete information about Calvary’s bereavement services, please see our Bereavement Services Brochure. If you would like to attend any of the groups, you must first meet with one of the group facilitators before attending your first session.

To make an appointment, please e-mail lpappalardi@calvaryhospital.org or call (718) 518-2173.

Dr. Sherry Schachter, Director of Bereavement Services, has created a bi-monthly newsletter about bereavement issues, Calvary In Touch. To view the most recent issue, please click here.

Community Services

1. PATIENT SUPPORT GROUP
This weekly support group offers a time for cancer patients in the community to share experiences and concerns regarding being a cancer patient.

Whether newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment or coping with survivorship, members gain insight and share knowledge.

2. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP
This weekly support group provides a time for family, friends and caregivers of cancer patients to benefit from learning new ways of coping with a stressful situation. We encourage caregivers to join in the early stages of illness, but accept new members at any time of need.

Groups are open to all, are free of charge, and are led by Calvary Hospital staff. Registration in advance of participation is required.
