Calvary Hospital Awarded $5M Grant for Nursing Excellence and Innovation from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation

Calvary Hospital announced today that it has been awarded a $5 million, five-year grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. The grant will enhance nursing excellence, enrich interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance patient and family care at Calvary, the leading provider of acute palliative and end-of-life care throughout Greater New York.

“We are extremely grateful to The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for supporting and believing in Calvary’s 125-year-old mission of compassionate, dignified care,” said Calvary President, Michael J. Fosina, FACHE.

Calvary is among 13 New York hospitals that received $51M from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation through a competitive process. The investment will help each hospital achieve industry-leading frameworks in nursing excellence, establish innovative programs to support front-line nurses, and help recent nurse graduates transition into the profession.

The grant, known as the Nursing Initiative, will enable Calvary to participate in the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center’s Pathway to Excellence (PTE) program. This program will enhance patient care, strengthen collaboration among healthcare team members, and draw more key professionals to the fields of palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care.

“The Foundation’s support will help Calvary enrich and strengthen an intentionally positive practice environment where nurses are inspired, engaged, and supported to excel in their roles,” said Linda Valentino, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, Calvary Hospital.“The Foundation’s investment is transformative. It recognizes that nursing excellence is a driving force for quality, access, innovation, and human-centered care across the healthcare continuum,” added Dr. Valentino.

Nursing excellence, according to Calvary President, Michael Fosina, is a core Calvary principle:

“Our participation in PTE and the support of The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation enhances Calvary’s professional environment, bolstering our sustained investments in workforce development, nurse education, patient care, and quality. A robust, diverse nursing workforce is essential for meeting the often-complex needs of Calvary’s patients and their families,” Mr. Fosina said.

“From Binghamton to the Bronx, New York nurses are the backbone of patient care, demonstrating dedication and resilience. Our Nursing Initiative is designed to provide the resources needed to ensure they can thrive and deliver the highest quality of care,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, Chief Executive Officer, Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. “By supporting nurses, we are investing in better patient care and outcomes.”

The Pathway to Excellence program recognizes healthcare organizations that foster a supportive and empowering workplace for nurses. It emphasizes shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being, and professional development. Achieving this status is a mark of distinction recognized worldwide.
