About Our Volunteers

Volunteer with patient in wheelchairCalvary’s reputation for the best end-of-life care is enhanced by our dedicated volunteers who provide invaluable support to our organization and advance our mission. Over 20,000 hours a year in contributing services, our volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and understanding to our patients and families. Calvary welcomes volunteers who come from diverse backgrounds or have knowledge of different cultural practices to join our team, including those fluent in Spanish, Italian, Chinese or Russian.

Whether you are a high school or college/pre-med student, a retiree, or an individual who is passionate about Calvary’s mission – we encourage you to be a part of our volunteer team!

Volunteer Roles

  • Visit patients at the Bronx and Brooklyn campuses only
  • “Friendly Visitors” provide companionship or respite for family members
  • Distribute or refill ice water in patient rooms
  • Feed patients during lunch or dinner time (these volunteers are trained by a Nurse Practitioner)
  • Transport patients to Therapeutic Recreation and assist with crafts, games, holiday celebrations or live entertainment
  • 1:1 recreational activities at the patient’s bedside (Brooklyn campus)
  • Provide clerical assistance within Calvary’s various departments

  • Visit patients in their homes or nursing/inpatient facilities throughout the New York Metropolitan area, including Westchester and Nassau counties
  • Provide companionship and supportive conversation to patients and families to increase socialization and facilitate life review
  • Sit with patients and provide respite for their caregivers
  • Engage patient in preferred activities and hobbies (reading to the patient, listening to music, playing cards/games, etc.)
  • Administrative duties (digital filing, composing admission packets, making survey calls and other projects as needed)

For Inpatient (Hospital) Volunteer Applications

Requirements:

  • Schedule a “Volunteer Meet & Greet” via Zoom with the Volunteer Coordinator (Duration: 15 mins)
  • Attend an (in-person) 1:1 Volunteer Orientation + Training day (Duration: 4 hours)
  • Must be 16 years or older (Student General Employment Certificate required)
  • Complete a standard background screening (applicants age 18 and over)
  • Must have medical clearance from Employee Health
  • Must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination

For Hospice (Community) Volunteer Applications

Requirements:

  • Complete the Online Volunteer Training + Orientation (Duration: 12 hours)
  • Must be 16 years or older (Student General Employment Certificate required)
  • Complete a standard background screening (applicants age 18 and over)
  • Must have medical clearance from Employee Health
  • Must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination
