COMMUNITY

Care does not abandon.

Calvary traces its formation to L’Association des Dames du Calvaire in Lyon, France, in 1842, and the work conducted by a young widow and bereaved mother, Madame Jeanne Francois Garnier. She and other women established numerous homes for indigent women dying from cancer throughout France and Belgium.

We are all caregivers.

The Philosophy of CalvaryCare®

Calvary consists of Calvary Hospital (Bronx and Brooklyn), Calvary@Home – which includes our Accredited Hospice, Certified Palliative Care Consult Service, and Accredited Home Health Agency, and The Palliative Care Institute.

Our priorities are our patients and their families. Since 1899, CalvaryCare® – safe, effective, timely, loving, expert care – has been at the core of our work. We provide compassionate care that relieves suffering and improves quality of life for patients with advanced cancer and other complex, life-limiting illnesses through a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, and community services in medical and at-home settings.

Each of us, in all our roles, eases the physical, emotional, and spiritual pain and suffering of those entrusted to our care. Our values are compassion, caring, commitment, dignity, and non-abandonment.

WE BELIEVE

We are all God’s children, caring for each other.

With compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience we meet the needs of mind, body, and spirit.

Personal choices made by patients and their families are to be understood and honored.

Families, friends, and loved ones are vital to every person’s palliative and hospice care experience.

Palliative and hospice care are transformational experiences for patients, families, and caregivers.

What does this mean for patients and families?

They are cared for, and loved, as unique people with individual needs.

They are our partners in care. It’s our responsibility to empower them and respect their choices.

We meet every person where they are and respond to their needs.

Care Statistics

There is nothing like CalvaryCare®

The United States Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recognize Calvary Hospital as a unique entity within the nation’s healthcare system. New York State also recognizes Calvary’s mission with the Access to End of Life Care law, which ensures that no insurance company can deny Calvary’s unique care to terminally ill patients.

The National Cancer Institute designates Calvary as an International Center for Training in Palliative Care. In addition, The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization places Calvary@Home above state and national averages regarding important patient issues such as pain relief and patient education.

Calvary is licensed by the State of New York Department of Health, accredited and certified by The Joint Commission, a beneficiary of The United Hospital Fund, and a member of ArchCare.

Calvary has the only fully accredited acute-care hospitals in the United States devoted exclusively to the palliative care of adult patients.

Nurse and Patient
Joint Commission

Accredited and Certified by The Joint Commission, Calvary achieved four Gold Seals of Approval® in 2022.

Following an unannounced, thorough on-site review of its quality and safety of care, Calvary again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation (Bronx and Brooklyn) by demonstrating its continuous compliance with the Commission’s performance standards.

Calvary also earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Home Care Accreditation and The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Community-Based Palliative Care (CBPC) Certification, the only such approval awarded in New York.

The Gold Seals of Approval® mean Calvary is internationally recognized for quality. Accreditation is effective for three years.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND PRESIDENT

We’re all caregivers, and more.

JOHN A. DECINA and FRANK A. CALAMARI

Every person associated with Calvary – from our employees to our associates, partners, and donors – is integral to easing the pain and suffering of those entrusted to our care and their families. We do more than care, however… we compatior.

Compatior, a Latin verb, means to suffer with one, to have compassion, and to feel pity. It’s what makes Calvary, Calvary.

In our Bronx Hospital lobby, there is a commissioned sculpture, The Compatior, inspired, designed, and named by the late Michael J. Brescia, MD, our Emeritus Medical Director. The piece is the embodiment of Calvary’s tradition to serve where the need is greatest among those who suffer the most. It memorializes our mission, representing caregivers who are intent on relieving our patients’ physical, emotional, and spiritual pain.

Living up to compatior every day is everyone’s responsibility. Whether we are providing direct patient care, clinical nutrition, transport, environmental services, maintenance or administrative functions, we work together to serve and to strengthen Calvary so our patients and their families benefit the most from all we offer.

Our people serve with compassion, work to strengthen relationships, strive to problem-solve, and love without exception, living our mission every moment.

We are grateful to our Boards, education partners, healthcare affiliates, foundations, businesses, private individuals, and community organizations who share their passion and support and encourage us to do more. They all understand that the work done by Calvary directly impacts the lives of so many, like no other healthcare provider in the nation.

As COVID-19 moved more and more toward an endemic stage in 2022, Calvary – and the entire American healthcare sector – remained challenged by historical labor shortages, increased expenses, inadequate reimbursement rates, and changing models of care. Through this complexity, we found opportunities to modernize our operations and technologies, strengthen our mission, and become more efficient to better serve our communities. As we approach our 125th Anniversary (in 2024), we believe Calvary’s recent advancements will result in a more modern and resilient organization.

We are blessed and grateful. Thank you for everything you do for Calvary.

CalvaryCare®

Care in the service of life.

Cardinal Dolan

His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Honorary Chairman of the Calvary Hospital Board of Directors, ministered at Calvary Hospital (Bronx) in June, tending to the needs of patients and their families, including Andris Pineda.

“Pope Francis reminds us that we are at our best as a community when we’re standing in defense and in service of life, from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. We are there because life is sacred, and the human person is made in God’s image of lightness. And so, at every stage of human life, the Church needs to be there, the community needs to be there, families need to be there. People [at the end of life] need loving care as much as the baby in the womb. Pope Francis always talks about the culture of life. He warns against a throwaway culture. He warns about us pushing our elders and those who are fragile and those who are near death just out of the way. Calvary is just a miraculous place.”

HIS EMINENCE, TIMOTHY CARDINAL DOLAN,
speaking to staff at Calvary in June as he blessed a plaque placed at the Tree of Life in memory of his mother, Shirley Jean Radcliffe Dolan.

Calvary, the first and only U.S. hospital committed to the palliative care of adults with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, provides end-of-life care to more people than any other single entity in the country. In 2022, 38% of Calvary Hospital patients had cancer.

EDUCATION

Learning to provide better care.

The inaugural class of Calvary’s RN Residency in Palliative and End-of-Life Care completed six months of their yearlong studies near the end of 2022. Tanyse Cornelius, RN, specialized in the care of adults living with HIV/AIDS for a decade before she was called to Calvary. “It’s genuine here. Everyone takes pride in their job and their position. You can tell that it’s their hearts that truly bring them to work.” On rounds, Tanyse learned that she and one of her patients shared their birthday. “[His family] wanted me to be there as he took his last breath. I was honored. That’s exactly what I wanted to do; provide a better experience for everyone.” Tanyse and her classmates will complete their Residency in June 2023, following a period of study with Calvary@Home.

Calvary made me comfortable with the uncomfortable

University of Rhode Island Juniors Becca Allder and Katie Fitzmaurice participated in their university’s Susan D. Flynn Palliative Care Undergraduate Fellowship over the summer, shadowing Calvary@Home Nurse Practitioners Ellen Zlobinski and Katherine Cocca-Bates. “Making sure the patient is comfortable and the family is knowledgeable, that’s what Katherine stressed to me,” said Allder. Fitzmaurice learned that “what the patient wants, matters.” And she admired the relationships that Calvary nurses had with their patients. “They treat the whole person, as well as the family. I will carry this Calvary experience with me for the rest of my career. I have become comfortable with being uncomfortable,” Fitzmaurice said.

COMMUNITY

Helping the Ukrainian Community

In March, Calvary worked with the Afya and US-Ukraine Foundations to donate medical supplies to Ukraine. Calvary, and partner Medline, shipped clotting bandages, medical tape, slings, dressings, antiseptics, and more. “This is one way we can extend Calvary’s compassion,” CEO Frank Calamari said at the time, noting Calvary’s staff of 30 Ukrainian and Russian heritage. Dr. Irina Makarevich, Director of Medical Services at Calvary Brooklyn, was born in western Ukraine. She described her colleagues as one community against the war supporting each other. “We feel for all Ukrainian and Russian people…They need sterile gauze, saline, and stocks of first aid material.” Calvary employees also contributed to Catholic Relief Services and The Knights of Columbus’ Ukrainian aid initiatives.

Navigating Grief

Calvary’s Camp Compass®, a week-long retreat for children and teens experiencing the death of loved ones due to illnesses, accidents, or violence, celebrated 25 years in August. “I see campers smile more as they develop their coping skills. I witness it every year. And they see it too. Life continues, and it does get better,” said Calvary President and CEO, Frank Calamari, who has welcomed more than 1,500 children from New York City communities since 1997 to Calvary’s annual summer program. Camp Compass®’s recreation and bereavement activities engage children, draw them out, and provide opportunities for them to bond. “Calvary is another part of me, like family! They really help me through my grieving,” said Jonathan, an eleven-year-old who lost his father in 2020. Calvary’s Bereavement Services host approximately 30 group sessions each week throughout the year for children of all ages, as well as adults who have experienced the death of a parent, partner, child, or sibling. Generous financial supporters of Calvary’s Camp Compass® include Newman’s Own Foundation, Ho/Chiang Foundation, Gray Foundation, and Trimble Family Foundation.

MESSAGE FROM THE CALVARY FUND, INC. CHAIRMAN

It’s not enough to simply have a good cause to promote, even if it is Calvary.

Carlos M. Hernandez
At the Calvary Fund, we lead growth, make connections, and inspire action. Our staff and network of supporters advocate for — and advance — Calvary, keeping Calvary a top philanthropic priority throughout Greater New York.

The Calvary Fund Leadership and Emeriti, Chairman’s Council, Professional Advisors Council, Emerging Leaders Committee, patrons such as The Storrs Society and The Society of 1899, and all donors steward relations, acquire support, and collaborate with Calvary to expand its reach and make an impact far beyond our dreams. Thank you for extending your credibility to Calvary’s mission, programs, and services in 2022.

As we approach our 125th anniversary in 2024, it’s important to acknowledge that no matter how old, large, or successful Calvary is, or what’s happening in the world, the work of “connecting” to advance Calvary’s mission is ongoing. 2022 was a difficult year for healthcare, but our fundraising efforts remained strong and our community became even more deeply engaged with our purpose and cause.

I remain indebted to Fund Vice-Chairs Eileen Nugent and Michael J.A. Smith, as well as our Emerging Leaders, Professional Advisors, and the entire Fund Board for their great council and service to Calvary. They are a wonderful source of motivation, bringing energy and expertise, and drawing more people closer to Calvary every day.

To all donors, named and unnamed here, especially those who have given to Calvary in the memory and in honor of a loved one – thank you. Thank you for being the driving force of the Fund, for promoting responsible philanthropy, for supporting strategic planning, and for connecting with each other throughout the year to advance Calvary. Thank you for stepping up and leaning in, again and again, to provide individuals and families with the best of care.

COMMUNITY

The Crucifixion 2

Care does not abandon.

Calvary traces its formation to L’Association des Dames du Calvaire in Lyon, France, in 1842, and the work conducted by a young widow and bereaved mother, Madame Jeanne Francois Garnier. She and other women established numerous homes for indigent women dying from cancer throughout France and Belgium. Toward the end of the 19th Century, our foundress, Mrs. Annie Blount Storrs, learned of their work and was inspired to establish the American House of Calvary in New York City in 1899. These women’s principles of compassion, dignity, love, and non-abandonment are the foundation of Calvary.

This picture of The Crucifixion 2 (50 x 30 cm, painting on wooden panel, 2019) by Bulgarian artist Julia Stankova, takes us to Calvary, where Christ was crucified. It depicts Mary, Jesus’s mother; Mary Magdalene; Mary, the mother of James and Joseph; Salome, the mother of James and John; and other women who loved Jesus, gathered near the foot of the cross. Consumed by grief, they exude compassion, dignity, and love. By the hour of His death on Good Friday, most who knew Christ had abandoned Him; the Women of Calvary had not.

The image is reproduced with permission from the artist who shared with Calvary in June 2022: “You help the sick…not to be anxious, confused and scared on the verge of death, but to leave this world with dignity and bright hope.”

CALVARY FUND, INC.

Our community cares about the impact of its generosity.

Fundraising was and is essential for the success and longevity of Calvary.
A generous gift of $15,000 at the turn of the 20th century enabled Calvary to expand its dwelling on Perry Street and open a second house to provide care to New York’s indigent and terminally sick women. Today, generous contributions from our loyal donors through Calvary’s strong fundraising programs continue to shape Calvary’s excellent care, high-quality facilities, new education programs, community outreach, and many other services. Enthusiastic Board, Council, and Committee members dedicated to Calvary’s overall mission nourish and sustain relationships on behalf of our patients and their families. What motivates them? Simply, the Calvary Fund and Donors are mission-driven, often with a personal connection to Calvary. Our values align. Donors also trust Calvary because they see what we do and are grateful for the care we provide. They are also engaged and understand the impact of their generosity across Calvary’s programs and services. Everyone associated with the Fund in 2022 has been essential to Calvary’s success. Thank you.

CALVARY GIVING SOCIETIES

Storrs Society

The Storrs Society is named after Calvary’s foundress, Annie Blount Storrs. According to a May 1906 obituary in The St. Vincent de Paul Quarterly: Mrs. Storrs was a member of an old North Carolina family, being a direct descendant of William Blount, who was one of the signers of the Constitution of the United States…[and] the wife of the late A. Storrs, of Albany. After his death, she went to Europe with her children and there, became interested in the work of the Women of Calvary…who devote all or part of their time to nursing destitute women afflicted with incurable diseases of a cancerous nature.

Mrs. Storrs was affiliated with the houses of the Women of Calvary in Lyons and in Brussels… To make the work known to Americans she translated a work called “Widows of Calvary” [and] persevered for years in her efforts to secure the cooperation of people of means, and the consent of the Archbishop of New York to establish the American House of Calvary. On June 12, 1899, she saw her long-cherished hope realized in the opening of the institution at No. 5 Perry Street.

Mrs. Storrs died suddenly of heart failure on February 19, 1906.

No. 5 Perry Street.

The question of establishing a House of Calvary in New York has been agitated, and we trust the movement may be successful…The necessity cannot be doubted.

Thank You For Your Generosity

The Storrs Society donor list acknowledges cumulative gifts of $1,000 or more received by Calvary during the period of January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022. We regret that limited space does not allow us to list gifts under $1,000, but please know that every donation of every size has contributed to the care of our patients and their families.

The Society of 1899

The Society of 1899 commemorates the year Calvary was established and continues to honor the Women of Calvary in New York and their legacy of comfort, care, and compassion. The Women’s aim was to furnish a home for women who were sick with cancer, poor and homeless, according to a 1902 edition of The Catholic World. The Society of 1899 recognizes donors during their lifetime for their legacy of care for those most in need.

PEOPLE

Curtis Edward Moore

Curtis Edward Moore

Ninety-six-year-old former Montford Point Marine, Private First Class, Curtis Edward Moore– among the first African Americans to enlist in the Marines–received care from Calvary@Home throughout 2022. Mr. Moore shared his story about leaving home in Harlem, bound for World War II: “They took all the black candidates…and put [us] in a certain [rail] car together. And the white candidates, they were in another car…even though we all took our oath of office at Grand Central Station together.”

Lukas and Sebastian

Lukas and Sebastian

New Rochelle brothers Lukas (left) and Sebastian (right) returned to Calvary Hospital in November, gifting Venus flytrap plants to residents in memory of their grandmother. The pair also brought justpublished copies of a book they co-authored with their mom (center) about the Leipold’s 2018 Calvary experience. When My Grandma Goes to Heaven (Archway Publishing) is about how a little gesture of compassion, a house plant, provided hope to people struggling through life’s ultimate challenge.

Christopher Comfort, MD

Caring about the challenges of caring for a growing aging population

Betty Nelson

Betty Nelson, PhD, RN Administrator,
Innovation & Special Projects at Calvary

…a leading obstacle to nurse recruitment was that hospice was not taught in most nursing schools…

Research published in the November 2022 issue of the peer-reviewed American Journal of Nursing (AJN) about disparities in end-of-life care and nurse recruitment featured expert opinion from Calvary’s Betty Nelson, PhD, RN Administrator, Innovation & Special Projects. Dr. Nelson spoke about the nationwide shortage of nurses, diversity among healthcare professionals, and the challenges of caring for a growing aging population. Noting the diversity in age, gender, and race in Calvary’s inaugural RN Residency Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care, Dr. Nelson emphasized the importance of providing cultural competency training and education among all nurses throughout the country.

Dr. Nelson said a leading obstacle to nurse recruitment was that hospice was not taught in most nursing schools: “There’s very little, if anything, in most undergraduate nursing curricula.” AJN reported that even with 1.5 million hospice RNs employed in the US, a deficit of qualified healthcare workers who can meet the growing demand for hospice and palliative care is expected over the coming decades.

34th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic
August 1, 2022
Westchester’s Brae Burn and Century Country Clubs

More than $250,000 was raised for Calvary at the summer classic, which drew nearly 200 guests. Starting with a colorful brunch and concluding with a lavish dinner, the players – who also participated in silent auctions and raffles – dedicated their time on the greens and the clay to Calvary’s Healthcare Heroes. Prize-winning golf and tennis players also won Amazon Gift Cards for their Calvary Hero counterpart. The Calvary Classic is dedicated in loving memory of Dennis E. Berberich, a devoted member of the Calvary Hospital Board and the Chairman of the Calvary Fund Board from 1985 until his passing in 2002.

Dennis dedicated his life’s work to the growth and success of the Hospital’s programs of care. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Calvary Hospital Golf Classic, and his love of the court resulted in the addition of tennis as part of the outing. Proceeds from the tennis portion of the event contribute to the Dennis Berberich Scholarship Fund for CalvaryCare® Technicians. His son, Dennis M. Berberich, served as Co-Chair of the Classic with Maryann Farrell and Joseph L. Nunziata. Special gratitude is extended to Dennis, Maryann, and Joseph for their leadership of this signature Calvary fundraiser.

Annual Spring Donor Appreciation Reception
June 8, 2022
The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx

The New York Botanical Garden reminded us in June that there is a time for everything, that life is beautiful, and life does continue… Nearly three hundred people gathered for the Annual Spring Donor Appreciation Reception and the Garden’s Around the Table: Stories of the Foods We Love exhibit where they explored the diversity and beauty of plants grown for cuisines enjoyed around the world. The tour was followed by a sensational cocktail hour, buffet dinner, and live music from the Janelle Jazz Trio.

“Calvary would never have been able to bloom, as it were, without the support of individuals like you.”

Organization

Calvary Holding Company, Inc. (the “Holding Company”) is a not-for-profit corporation organized under Section 402 of the Not-ForProfit Corporation Law of the State of New York. The Holding Company is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as exempt from federal income tax under the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code (“IRC”) as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3). The purpose of the Holding Company is to engage in charitable, scientific, and medical activities to support Calvary Hospital, Inc. (the “Hospital”) and its affiliated organizations which are exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC. ArchCare, a not-for-profit corporation, operated in connection with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, is the sole corporate member of the Holding Company

Principles of Combination

The combined financial statements of the Holding Company and affiliates include the accounts of the following organizations of which the Holding Company is the sole corporate member:

  • Calvary Fund, Inc. (the “Fund”) is a not-for-profit corporation recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC. The Fund’s purpose is to solicit, accept, and receive real and personal property and to collect income therefrom to be applied exclusively to any health-related charitable organization or corporation affiliated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. However, the current and historical intent has been to provide exclusive support to the Hospital.
  • The Holding Company is also the sole member of Calvary Network Management Services, LLC, an inactive organization.

In addition, primarily because it is under common management with the above organizations, the Hospital is included in the combined financial statements. The Hospital is a not-forprofit specialty hospital that provides services for the care of terminally ill cancer patients. The Hospital, which is operated in connection with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC.

Intercompany transactions and amounts have been eliminated.
