Message From The Chairman Of The Board And President

JOHN A. DECINA and FRANK A. CALAMARI

We are blessed at Calvary to be with our patients and their families at their most difficult times. Every day we are focused on them, and on the essentials: comfort, care, and compassion.

In 2021, as we all began to define and come to terms with a new normal, Calvary continued to deliver on the essentials, providing comprehensive and safe, world-renowned care.

We benefited from many opportunities to renew our commitment and strengthen our resolve to care for the medical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our patients and families, no matter the circumstances. At every juncture, as we realized COVID-19 would remain part of our environment, there were opportunities to revisit and renew our purpose and experience grace, hope, and joy.

In addition, membership in our patron program, The Storrs Society, grew by 15%.

2021 also marked the twentieth anniversary of two Calvary innovations:

  • CalvaryCare® at Brooklyn, at NYU Langone, the first “hospital-within-a-hospital” in New York State; and
  • the establishment of Calvary@Home, our comprehensive home-care and hospice service for patients who live throughout Greater New York.

Calvary displayed an amazing depth of commitment to its mission in 2021 and continues to do so with compassion, integrity, and excellence, making the healing presence of God known in our community.

We are grateful, thankful, and blessed. Thank you for all that you do for Calvary.

Our foundresses, the Women of Calvary, knew that Calvary would always stand strong.

And the remarkable volunteers, nurses, doctors, caregivers, chaplains, social workers, and donors who supported us throughout 2021 ensured that Calvary was there, constant and true.

We are grateful to Calvary employees and the wonderful people who make our lives and our work more satisfying and fulfilling, including our Board members, education partners, healthcare affiliates, foundations, businesses, private individuals, and community organizations, all of which provided Calvary with extraordinary support in 2021.

The Calvary Fund raised $49.2 million to date toward its transformational $100 million campaign goal, thanks to existing and new donors who support Calvary’s growing service to the community.

Message From The Calvary Fund Chairman

Carlos M. Hernandez
2021 provided the Calvary Fund with opportunities to renew its mission in support of Calvary, and to collaborate with our donors to enhance the lives and wellbeing of Calvary patients and their families.

The report which follows describes the Fund’s achievements and highlights the impact of our donors in areas such as Patient Care, Bereavement Support, and Education.

Calvary Fund members’ support is multifaceted at all levels and in all capacities. Your participation and contributions to Fund initiatives and ongoing programs continue to clarify and strengthen what we do for Calvary.

Donations have been essential to Calvary, even before the doors of the American House of Calvary opened on Perry Street in lower Manhattan in 1899. It took our foundress, Annie Blount Storrs, five years of networking with “ecclesiastical authorities” and “sympathetic people of means” to acquire enough support and funding to welcome and care for their first eight patients.

Today, we continue to rely on our benefactors to keep Calvary’s doors wide open. Thank you for being the driving force of the Fund for promoting responsible philanthropy, supporting strategic planning, and connecting throughout the year to advance causes that advance Calvary.

Through the Fund, you demonstrate your commitment to:

  • Providing comfort and compassion;
  • Accountability and responsible stewardship; and
  • Excellent care and community trust.

I am indebted to Fund Vice-Chairs Eileen Nugent and Michael J.A. Smith, as well as our Emerging Leaders, Professional Advisors, and the entire Fund Board for their great council and service to Calvary.

As passionate ambassadors, they are a wonderful source of motivation for all of us. They bring energy and expertise, share our story, and draw more people closer to Calvary.

To all donors, named and unnamed here, especially those who have given to Calvary in the memory and honor of a loved one, please know how much your generosity of spirit and commitment to our community inspires us to serve Calvary with great care, love, and understanding.

Thank you.

Collaborating with colleagues across the organization and their stakeholders, we have increased awareness of Calvary’s efforts and achievements. Everyone associated with the Fund has been crucial to the success of our 2021 fundraising campaigns.

development numbers

The Calvary Fund raised $49.2 million to date toward its transformational $100 million CalvaryCare® Initiative goal, thanks to existing and new donors who support Calvary’s growing service to the community.

Half of the funds will contribute to Calvary’s Margin of Excellence, which will maintain Calvary’s unmatched medical expertise and extraordinary services of CalvaryCare®, including Bereavement Support and Family Care. The other half will fund expanded patient services, deepen and amplify research, endow existing programs, and enable Calvary to protect patient care in times of crises, such as the pandemic and natural disasters.

Storrs logo

In 1899, a small group of widows in New York, inspired by work undertaken by The Women of Calvary in France and Belgium, began caring for the city’s destitute women with terminal diseases. Led by Annie Blount Storrs, they provided care in their own homes before acquiring two brownstones on Perry Street, in Greenwich Village, and establishing the American House of Calvary.

Storrs spent five years politicking with New York “ecclesiastical authorities” and “sympathetic people of means” to open Calvary. An early gift of $15,000 from a private donor helped the women expand their facilities and program.

Storrs buildings

The question of establishing a House of Calvary in New York has been agitated, and we trust the movement may be successful…The necessity cannot be doubted.

Calvary’s Impact: Research

Healing Flowers

A study published in Omega – Journal of Death and Dying, led by the City University of New York’s Dr. Joanne Lavin (Associate Director of Nursing Programs at CUNY’s School of Professional Studies), with Calvary’s Debbie Feldman and Stephanie Mastropaolo, provided evidence that Calvary’s Flowers for Healing program consistently helped patients’ family members heal and relax.

Describing the Calvary Family Care Center program as “comforting, therapeutic, and educational,” Flowers for Healing provided families the opportunity to actively do something for their loved ones while simultaneously taking time for themselves to engage in a stress-reducing activity.

Healing Flowers

I was able to surprise my mother while at Calvary with a beautiful arrangement I had made. She said, “It’s beautiful!” It was the first time mommy spoke to me in two days. When I told her that I made it for her, she gave me a kiss and said “I love you.”

STUDY PARTICIPANT

Recharge Room

Amidst COVID, Calvary installed a new bio-experiential environment, known as the Recharge Room to address stress, anxiety, and trauma among staff. Introduced in 2021, the evidence-based intervention space – located on the Hospital’s ground floor – mimics natural settings (beaches, waterfalls, and rainforests) by employing sophisticated multisensory design technologies such as psychoacoustics, scent therapy, and immersive video to promote rehabilitation and resilience.

Research shows that cognitive restoration occurs in natural settings, even virtual ones such as the studio at Calvary. When similar technology was rolled out at other hospitals in New York in response to the pandemic, users reported as much as a 60% reduction in stress after just a single 15-minute recharge.

Calvary’s Impact: People

The Daisy Award

Kalamee Golden, RN, BSN, was a recipient of the 2021 Daisy Award® for Extraordinary Nurses.

Kalamee Golden, RN, BSN

The Daisy Foundation, an international organization, honors nurses wherever they practice, in whatever role they serve, and throughout their careers – from nursing student through lifetime achievement, for their extraordinary compassionate and skillful care.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the community is that all patients with life-limiting illnesses have given up on life and living. I have experienced many patients and families who are so full of life and joy despite their circumstances, and that in turn allows those providing them care to be lively and joyous along with them.

Development Events

Awards Gala

The Calvary Awards Gala was held virtually on Thursday, December 9, 2021 with Sade Baderinwa, Anchor, Eyewitness News, WABCTV, and Ryan Field, Sports Anchor, Eyewitness News, WABC-TV, serving as the evening’s emcees. Richard M. McVey, Chairman & CEO of MarketAxess Holdings Inc., was awarded the Calvary Medal by Carlos M. Hernandez, Chairman of the Calvary Fund, in recognition of his distinguished corporate and civic leadership to benefit our community.

In addition, The Cairo Family, who has been a leading supporter of Calvary for over 25 years through the Pat Cairo Family Foundation, was the deserving recipient of the Calvary Spirit of Family Award, while comedian Jim Gaffigan and his wife Jeannie were presented with The Compatior Award for their support of the Calvary mission of service.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Thomas J. Fahey, Jr., MD, who stepped down as Chair of the Calvary Hospital Board in May. As part of the Virtual Gala, Al Roker, Host of NBC’s TODAY, interviewed Dr. Fahey on his decades of transformative leadership at Calvary. Thank you to all of this year’s honorees and the many donors and supporters whose participation made this year’s Virtual Gala such a success.

33rd Annual Golf & Tennis Classic

The Annual Golf and Tennis Classic was held at Brae Burn Country Club and Century Country Club in Purchase, NY, raising over $300,000 in support of the patients and families served by Calvary. At this year’s event, all golf and tennis players played in honor of Calvary staff members, and if they were the recipients of any prize awarded on the course or courts, their corresponding “Calvary Hero” was awarded a prize as well. Special thank you to our Golf Co-Chairs, Dennis M. Berberich, Maryann Farrell and Joseph L. Nunziata for their continued leadership, and to all our players, sponsors and supporters.
